Please open your terminal and run this command and tell us the output so that we can see exactly what is wrong:
ls -la /Users/Shared/Library/Preferences

Just some feedback from another MAC user here - I could not download PT4 on to my MAC computer also. However, I followed the instructions as advised and it worked first time so thank you :)
ps, I had to do the two steps in the process.

I created a folder named 'Preferences' (minus quotes) in the /Users/Shared/Library folder. That was all that was required to allow PT4 to install and function as expected. The Finder made me give an admin authentication in order to be able to create the folder btw.
