Database

Postby yshenkm » Wed May 02, 2012 11:19 am

PostgresSQL is curretnly occuping 125GB on my, I am changing my computer and the computer guy said that for best performance the database should stay on the same disk or go to a scratch disk (sdd),

I currently have 600GB c drive buy going to get a 240GB SDD for speed, what is the best way to do it, as if the database is so large and grows quickly 240 will not be enough..

1. First I will like to know if such a size is normal for large databases (I think I have 4 databases),?
2. are there large files that are not necessary for the speed that I can move?
3.how will I delete a database?
4. how do I check the size of a specific database?
5. any suggestion on how to set it up best way and that my c drive does not get filled with the database?

thanks

How many hands do you have in these databases? That will help me tell more quickly if these sizes are normal - from the sizes you describe, I would expect at least 10 million hands.

There is one folder in the PostgreSQL directory that contains logs which can be removed - this is the pg_log folder (please note that ONLY pg_log has discardable logs - pg_clog and pg_xlog should not be touched).

The files in the pg_log folder can be discarded. Depending on your settings, these can add up very quickly.

You can delete databases via the Database Management window, but do note that this cannot be undone.

The easiest way to check database size is via PGAdmin III - open up PGAdmin and connect to your server and in the list of databases, click on it and change to the Statistics tab on the top right. The last row there will tell you the size of the database in a human readable format.
