My initial thoughts.

Postby KeithMM » Thu Apr 05, 2012 5:59 am

Hi , I downloaded the beta yesterday and tried it on my computers. Have a full version of HEM2 and and was one of the first public beta testers.

Couple of initial observations were that on my xp machine it didn't pick up my stars hand history folder which is located in the stars folder but it did pick up the stars hand history folder on my vista machine which is located elsewhere.

I got worried during the database import stage of the installation as it seemed to extract lots of hand histories (3 million) and the hard disc usage figure was getting extremely high so that i was worried that the hard disc would be full before the installation would be complete so i cancelled that stage part way through. Do you do any checks on whether there is enough hard disc space available to extract and import a complete databaseand issue any warning to say that you believe there is enough hard discspace available to complete the process to allay users concerns.

Is the hand history import multithreaded, i.e have one or more threads extracting the hands and other thread(s) importing the hands . On my quad cored machine , the database import ran about 200 hands per second (hem1->hem2), PT4 seemed to run at about 100 hands pr second on the import stage but that didnt include the hand extraction stage which took a long time on the big database. With big databases could you extract say 100,000 hands and then import those before continuing to extract another 100k hands to save on hard disc capacity.

One bug i did notice was that i played with someone whose screenname was all numbers. In the hud the playername had the numbers but had extra commas added to format it. i.e iif his screenname was 12134567 the hud displayed it as 12,134,567 but with the last few numbers blanked off where they didn't fit the allocated space.

We do check to make sure there will be enough hard drive space for the database and we should warn you if there are going to be problems in that regard.

The extraction and import are both limited mostly by hard drive read/write times, so multithreading these processes would actually not improve overall performance a whole lot. We remove the temporary export files after they are imported to conserve space, and as I said, we do make sure there is room before we start anything.

The issue with players whose name is all numbers is a known one that is on our list to be fixed.

not sure if this is a bug or a feature not implemented yet. When i went to type the previous post in from the community section of PT4 , it said i was signed in as keithMM in the top right corner of the screen but it came up with a message saying that i had to log in in order to post. seemed a bit odd as i had already logged into the forum to get the beta licence code and do the download and it was saying that i was already signed in.

Sometimes the login for the site and the forums can get out of sync and you'll need to login using the button at the very bottom of the forums again. It's something we're trying to fix but it's somewhat random and thus a bit difficult to track down.

i've been importing my saved hands onmy dual cored home machine . 2 million hands in and its managing the impressive total of 17 hands per sec and been running solid for 2 days now . plenty of hard disc space available on that machine and not running anything else. Is this typical or is PT4 really struggling with large databases? only another 1.3 million hands to go.

so, my 5 year old son cleverly (not) turned the computer off this morning.just checked the processed folder and none of the files seemed to have been copied across to the processed folder. Isn't this a major error. it has been running two days to import the hands and if it had been moving the files it could have just restarted from the point it had got to. Now its got 2days of importing duplicate hands into the database in order to finish importing the hand histories.

Manual imports do not move the processed files as often this is used to import from the archive location. The duplicate hands hands should be skipped pretty quickly, although I realize that it's still frustrating in this case.

can't you add an option menu button to move the files from source to processed folder with a yes no option in the manual import screen.

i copied the source directory anyway to protect the hand histories . this would allow interruptions with importing big databases ....i.e leave the import running during daytime and overnight , and be able to stop the import to play your session . then continue the import from where you got to overnight again.

I'll make a note of this suggestion and bring it to the development team on your behalf at the appropriate time.
