noob can't set up PostgreSQL - help?

Postby berkbrown » Wed Dec 28, 2011 3:15 am

Hi, trying to set up the PT4 beta, but getting 'fatal error' upon trying to initially follow default setup for PostgreSQL.
I haven't run PT for over a year, don't know if it wants to use prior database, or set up a new one for PT4.

I remember having some difficulty years ago setting it up, but not sure if I'm missing a simple step here.

Please advise... Thanks!

If PostgreSQL is already installed on your machine (and it should be if you were previously using PT3) then it doesn't need to be installed again.
However, you will probably find that the best thing to do is install 9.0 to use with PT4. You can get 9.0 from www.PostgreSQL.org/download.
(Do not install 9.1 - that is new and still has problems so is not supported by PokerTracker yet.)

Run the installer and use all the defaults except for changing the port number - I'd suggest 5490 for 9.0 as that is easier to remember. If it asks for a password use our default 'dbpass'.
When you run PT4 enter the same information (localhost, 5490, postgres, dbpass) and then PT4 will connect to the PostgreSQL 9.0 service.

Any other tips for existing PT3 users on how to safely test PT4? Approximately how long would it take to convert a 44 GB PostgreSQL 8.3.7 PT3 database to a PostgreSQL 9.0.6 PT4 database? If there are any problems with PT4, can we just go back to grinding with PT3 and export the hands from PT4?

Conversion time is very dependent on the speed of your system, so it's hard to give an estimate - a database of that size will take some considerable time, though.
To start with I'd suggest importing a few of your recent hands directly from the original hand history files, which will be in the PokerTracker 3\Processed folder by default.

You can import the same files into PT3 and PT4, and you can run them completely independently - if you need to run PT3 again you can import the original HH files as above.

PostgreSQL 9.0 setup asks for a postgres password, but 'dbpass' gets the error message "Please enter the correct password for the postgres windows user account." I opened my \PokerTracker3\Data\Config\PokerTracker.cfg file and use the password 'superuser' I used before for v8.3 (Default.Postgres.Password=superuser), but still get the same error message. :(

What can I do next? Is my only choice to follow the instructions to remove the PostgreSQL password? Will this affect my running of PT3 and PostgreSQL v8.3.17?

Try "svcPASS83" as the password - the postgres user password can be different from the password used to connect to the PostgreSQL service.
