Postgres update?!?!?!

Postby jayme1987 » Mon Sep 16, 2024 6:22 pm

Hello,

So i stupidly updated pt4 today and it obviously crashed and i lost my db which was upsetting but life goes on.

Did not know/ read that this latest version does not support old postgres 9.x which i deleted.

I installed postgres 16.x but its 1gb in size and i have no db now.

Is 12.x better smaller?

thanks in future maybe a warning when update comes up to say you must backup db as this new version does not support older versions of postgres (or did you not know this at the time)?

If PokerTracker 4 were to crash databases are not just lost. What exactly happened? What version of PokerTracker 4 did you update from? Did you install PokerTracker v4.18.2 and it was unresponsive after starting? If you updated from a relatively recent release to PokerTracker v4.18.2 this requires a small database update which doesn't take very long for most databases. This only needs to be done once for each database (when a database is first made active) and if it's left alone the update should complete. For larger databases there may be a longer delay the first time starting PokerTracker 4 after updating and for the next release a message will be included to address this. If you were updating from a much older version of PokerTracker 4 having skipped mutiple releases then more database updates may be required.

That's not correct for PostgreSQL v9.3+. The minimum requirement for PokerTracker 4 is PostgreSQL v9.3 as detailed here.

Did you just uninstall PostgreSQL or did you actually delete the PostgreSQL 'data' folder that gets left behind? If you didn't delete the 'data' folder then you can potentially recover the data by reinstalling the same version of PostgreSQL again.

If you have a database backup you can restore your data from that. You can also import hands into a new database using 'Play Poker -> Get Hands From Disk'. By default PokerTracker 4 moves your files to your 'Processed' folder:

C:\Users\{Windows Login}\AppData\Local\PokerTracker 4\Processed

Guide: Processed Files

PostgreSQL v12 is older so it's not likely to be any better than PostgreSQL v16. It might use slightly less space when installing but the primary factor of how much disk space PostgreSQL uses will be determined by the number of hands in your database.

For larger updates PokerTracker 4 does prompt the user to create database backups before updating. The only critical PostgreSQL error that I am aware of (specifically Error: Unable to execute query: Fatal Error; Reason: ERROR: column "some_time" does not exist) using PokerTracker v4.18+ is related to versions of PostgreSQL that are below the minimum required version - see this thread. In those cases the databases can be backed up and restored to a newer version of PostgreSQL.
